The Shrine of Jesus in the Holy Sepulchre at Landayan, San Pedro City, recently celebrated the grand fiesta of their beloved patron, Lolo Uweng, on May 29th. This year’s fiesta marked the 187th year of unyielding devotion to Lolo Uweng, drawing devotees from Barangay Landayan, nearby towns, and priests from various parts of the Diocese of San Pablo. The theme for this year’s celebration was “Dambana ni Lolo Uweng: Kaisa natin sa Pagbubuklod, Pakikilahok, at Pagmimisyon tungo sa pagpapalaganap ng Debosyon.”

Throughout the day, several masses were conducted, with four esteemed priests leading the fiesta masses. The first mass at 6:00 AM was presided by Rev. Fr. Jorge Seldon Coronado, the Parish Priest of Sto. Rosario Parish and the Episcopal Vicar of the First Ecclesiastical District of the Diocese. Subsequently, the concelebrated mass at 9:00 AM was presided by Rev. Fr. Reynante Tolentino, the Parish Administrator and Rector of the Antipolo Cathedral, which was recently declared the International Shrine of Our Lady of Peace and Good Voyage (Nuestra Señora de la Paz y Buen Viaje). Father Tolentino also serves as the President of the Association of Catholic Shrines and Pilgrimages of the Philippines. The other two priests, Rev. Fr. Ireneo Oliver, Shrine Rector and Parish Priest of the Diocesan Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Pagsanjan, and Rev. Fr. Reynald Atienza, the Parochial Vicar of Our Lady of Fatima Parish in Calamba City, presided over the 4:00 PM mass. Both priests are natives of Barangay Landayan.

One of the memorable moments during the fiesta was the homily delivered by Father Nante during the 9 AM concelebrated mass. He emphasized the significance of devotion to the image of Jesus in the Holy Sepulchre, which symbolizes God’s love and the sacrifice of Jesus Christ for our salvation. Father Nante also stressed the importance of loving others, particularly the less fortunate, as an essential aspect of being devotees of Lolo Uweng.

Another notable highlight of the fiesta was the grand procession of Lolo Uweng, which took place after the 4 PM mass. Thousands of devoted followers joined the procession, coming to pray and pay homage to the sacred image. The procession lasted for over six hours as the image, accompanied by the representations of the patron saints of chapels under the Sto. Sepulcro Parish, traversed the communities of Landayan, San Roque, and Cuyab. This procession served as a profound expression of faith, uniting the community in their devotion to Lolo Uweng and their shared spiritual journey.

The fiesta served as a testament to the enduring love and devotion of Barangay Landayan towards Lolo Uweng, which extends to the nearby towns and provinces. As Lolo Uweng commemorates his 187th year, the fervor of devotion is expected to spread further, aligning with the vision of the parish, the shrine, and its devoted followers. The celebration not only strengthens the spiritual bond among the faithful but also reinforces the community’s commitment to live out the teachings and virtues exemplified by Lolo Uweng—love, compassion, and unwavering faith.

As the fiesta came to a close, the faithful departed with hearts filled with gratitude and renewed dedication to embody the spirit of Lolo Uweng. The Shrine of Jesus in the Holy Sepulchre will continue to serve as a sacred space where devotion thrives, and where the community finds solace and inspiration.
